Oil Painting with Ricky: Fundamentals, Approaches and Techniques:  Learn about oil painting with Ricky, exploring every step of the painting process from initial sketch to  transferring the sketch onto the canvas, applying a coloured ground, applying initial layers, impasto effects, blending, detailing, texturing, finishing, varnishing and more.  We will create at least one highly detailed finished work with a subject of the group's choosing and also do a variety of exercises and skills building along the way.  The style of painting I teach will take your strong foundation in drawing and translate that into full colour oil painting with beautiful brush strokes and textures.  Creativity will be encouraged and, after our first finished painting where we all create a painting of the same subject, students will get to create a second painting with their own choice of subject matter with 1 on 1 guidance from Ricky.  Oil painting will impart a looser, freer painting style and help break tight artists out of their comfort zone.  

Materials Options:

Pay $315+hst to bring your own art materials for use in this course.

Pay $345+hst to use studio paints & brushes.  Students who select this option are still required to bring or purchase their own canvases.

MATERIALS LIST:  

* Oil Paints (Small tubes will be fine but it might be a good idea to get a larger tube of Titanium White.  You don't have to have the highest quality brand but avoid the low low quality, here are my recommended brands which should all be available at Michael's.  High End: Gamblin Artist Oils, Winsor & Newton Professional  / Medium End: Gamblin 1980 Oils, Winsor & Newton Winton)

Ultramarine Blue or Indanthrene Blue
Lemon Yellow
India Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Deep
Cadmium Red Light
Alizarin Crimson
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna

(A note about the colour palette above: this palette includes a warm and cool of each primary.  As long as you have a warm and cool of each primary, it is not crucial that you have the exact same colours as above.  For example, you could substitute Cobalt Blue for another similar blue like Cerulean, etc.)

* Paint Brushes: For painting with oils, I like to have some stiff Hog Bristle brushes in a variety of sizes, I prefer filberts but flats or rounds would work as well, and some soft synthetic brushes also in a variety of sizes.  Please ensure you have a couple small round soft synthetic brushes around 1, 2 size for detail work.  I realize this isn't a strict list of brushes so please feel free to just bring what you have and I can always supplement with a studio brush or two if you need.  I tend to use a lot of brushes while oil painting so the more the merrier!  

* Small Bottle of Refined Linseed Oil with a little ramekin or cup.  

* Brush cleaning tank (tightly sealed) with odourless mineral spirits for cleaning brushes.  The tank can be a Silicoil Brush Cleaning tank, another tank designed for brush cleaning, or simply a sealed mason jar.  All solvents must remain sealed during class.

* Disposable palette paper or preferred reusable palette.  I prefer disposable palette paper pad or paper plates as cleaning up oil paint palettes is annoying.
