Instructor: Ricky Schaede

In this 7-week series, students will learn in-depth about drawing highly detailed, realistic eyes from a macro photo reference with guidance from artist instructor Ricky Schaede.  As a group, we will vote on our first eye drawing subject from a few options and we will all draw a picture of the same subject together.  We will also decide as a group whether to use graphite or coloured pencils.  More experienced students may choose to do a different medium than the class chooses, for example if the class chooses colour but you have your heart set on graphite, go for it.  For the first 3-4 classes, we will all draw the same eye from the same reference, taking special care to learn how to the meticulous detail of the iris, white of the eye, reflection, and structure around the eye.

For the remaining 3-4 classes, students will create a self directed artwork, either of an eye or another subject of their choosing, with 1 on 1 help from Ricky.  Ricky will bring his camera and macro lens and offer to take a high resolution, detailed photo of each student's eye, so that if they wished they could create a portrait of their own eye.  Students may also opt to choose a different eye, or a different subject entirely, for example they could instead choose to draw an animal, a botanical, a mushroom, or another subject from nature.  Students will work on their self directed drawings with 1 on 1 help from Ricky.

Drawing eyes are a specialty of mine and I love them as a subject!  Join me to dive deep into the window to the soul! ~Ricky

Materials List:

Every student will need:

A Sketchbook 8x10 or 9x12, the higher quality paper the better.
Sketching pencil set (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B.  Most pencil sets you buy in an art store will have a good range of pencils so as long as you have some light pencils 2H, 4H and some dark pencils like 2B and 6B you’ll be good!)
Kneadable Eraser
Rubber Eraser
Pencil Sharpener
Paper Blending Stump

Set of High Quality Coloured Pencils. Preferred brands are Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, Faber-Castell Polychromos or Prismacolor Premier. The more colour choices you have, the better, so a bigger set is best. If you already have a big set of coloured pencils but they aren’t the top quality brands listed above, they should work fine for this course, as long as they are soft and have good colour quality.  I sell the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor at my studio but all of the major brands are also available on Amazon or at local art stores.

Colourless Blending Pencil (this is a special type of colourless coloured pencil, prismacolor and Lyra make good ones, I do sell the lyra brand colourless blender at my studio but you should also be able to find these on amazon)

Smooth Bristol Paper for our Beautiful Eye Drawings, Size 8.5” x 11” or 9” x 12”.  This paper is available in pads, I like the Canson XL brand, I do also sell these here at my studio.

Optional Items: (these items aren’t required but they are useful and a great addition to your materials kit!)

Tombow Mono Zero Fine Point Eraser
Electric Eraser
Soft paintbrush for sweeping away eraser shavings
