In this 7-week series, students will learn in-depth about drawing highly detailed, realistic eyes from a macro photo reference with guidance from artist instructor Ricky Schaede. As a group, we will vote on our first eye drawing subject from a few options and we will all draw a picture of the same subject together. We will also decide as a group whether to use graphite or coloured pencils. More experienced students may choose to do a different medium than the class chooses, for example if the class chooses colour but you have your heart set on graphite, go for it. For the first 3-4 classes, we will all draw the same eye from the same reference, taking special care to learn how to the meticulous detail of the iris, white of the eye, reflection, and structure around the eye.
For the remaining 3-4 classes, students will create a self directed artwork, either of an eye or another subject of their choosing, with 1 on 1 help from Ricky. Ricky will bring his camera and macro lens and offer to take a high resolution, detailed photo of each student's eye, so that if they wished they could create a portrait of their own eye. Students may also opt to choose a different eye, or a different subject entirely, for example they could instead choose to draw an animal, a botanical, a mushroom, or another subject from nature. Students will work on their self directed drawings with 1 on 1 help from Ricky.
Drawing eyes are a specialty of mine and I love them as a subject! Join me to dive deep into the window to the soul! ~Ricky
